January 16, 2012 - The American Austin Bantam Club
celebrates 50 years in 2012 and it is all thanks to our club
founder, Larry Spindler. Larry of Morris, New York, was snooping
around the back lot of an avid British car dealer and mechanic
when he spotted an American Austin coupe. It wasn't much to
look at----surface rust, roof gone, interior moldy---but it was
mostly complete. Larry talked the guy into selling the car for 45
bucks.
Now that he had the car, how was he going to find the support to
preserve and restore it? In the late 1950's, Austin and Bantam
enthusiasts were a lonely bunch. On a few occasions, one might
run into someone with a car at a swap meet. Owners wanted to
join a club, but no one knew how to start one. So Larry Spindler
took charge. It all began with a letter. On September 17, 1962,
John S. of St. Catherines, Ontario wrote a letter to Patrick M. of
Florida. "I have received a registration form from Larry Spindler of
Morris, New York, who is starting the American [Austin] Bantam
Club. The membership fee is $5 and I plan to join. It sounds as if
he can organize one...."
The American Austin Bantam Club was born in 1962. Fifty years
later, Larry's club is still going strong thanks to many volunteers.
Our national meets are more than just a car meet---they are
family reunions where members greet each other with hugs. We
may kick tires, "ooh and ah" at the latest restoration but we are
humble enough to drool over the basket case. Members just love
to share technical tips with each other. If your car is going to
break down, the national meet is the place to be. With so many
experienced mechanics around, you're bound to find a solution.
Our annual membership dues haven't kept up with inflation. A
$5.00 membership in 1962 is worth $37.00 in today's dollars. Yet
we have kept our dues at a reasonable $20.00 per calendar year
for those within the United States and $25.00 for those living
outside our borders.
So what are you waiting for? Join the club and come visit us at
the national meet in Flat Rock, North Carolina. All participants
must be a member of the club and pay the registration fee to sell
parts or drive an Austin or Bantam car on the annual tour.
If your face lights up when you see a little Austin or Bantam
driving down the road, that is Larry Spindler's legacy. Thanks to
his early efforts, hundreds of American Austin, Austin Seven and
American Bantam cars will be preserved for generations to come.
See you in North Carolina!
